5-Day Sober and Wellness Itinerary in Los Angeles

It’s got the Lakers, the Clippers, the Rams, the Raiders, and the Kings – and those are just a few of the major league sports that call Los Angeles home. There’s also Hollywood, bars, and night clubs galore – oh yeah, and the freaking Pacific Ocean! There is so much to do in LA that it’s known as one of the entertainment capitols of the world.

All of that entertainment also comes with temptation for sober people. You can’t swing a cat without hitting some place to see a show and grab drinks or to get high. So it may surprise you that Los Angeles is also considered one of the best places to go for a sober getaway.

According to addiction recovery specialists, one of the best ways to stay sober while on vacation is to focus on wellness and to stay active. When you are focused on purifying and cleansing your body while at the same time staying occupied, the last thing you want to do is dump poison down your gullet.

Los Angeles has mastered the pampered life! In addition to the many places to get tipsy in L.A., there are also dozens if not hundreds of spa and wellness spots where you can get pampered while focusing on wellness so that you don’t risk a relapse. We put together a 5-day sober and wellness Los Angeles itinerary that will guide you through five days of pampered bliss and excitement to help keep you on the wagon!

Where to Stay in L.A.

If you’re traveling to LA, you’ll need a place to stay. We picked 3 kickass hotels for you to choose from. Even if you live in LA, you should make this a real getaway and book a room too!

1. West Hollywood Wellness Center

To stay on the straight and narrow while on vacation, you may want to find a place where no alcohol is served. You’re going to be hard pressed to find a hotel like that in LA. But we did find a Wellness Center right in the heart of LA called Remedy Place. You get daily wellness classes, treatments, and detox. Here you can focus strictly on wellness while you are at the hotel to keep you on track while during the day you go out and explore this itinerary.

2. Luxury Hotel on Route 66

Staying at Kimpton La Peer Hotel puts you smack dab in the heart of it all, especially for this itinerary. This luxury boutique hotel sits around the corner and down the street from Beverly Blvd and Rodeo Drive. You’ll barely need transportation at all besides your two feet to get around on your 5-day sober and wellness getaway! Plus there’s a fancy little trattoria inside called Viale Dei Romani that you simply have to try.

Choosing the historic Hollywood Roosevelt will not only put you in the center of the action but it is a hotel with a lot of Hollywood history where famous legends and mysteries abound. Some even say that it is haunted! We don’t know about all of that but what we do know is that this hotel is super lush and hosts all kinds of events every day of the week including a cabaret show.

5-Day Sober and Wellness Los Angeles Itinerary

Before you get started, we should note that while we’ve broken this itinerary down by day, the activities, locations, and events listed have varying operating hours. Depending on what 5 days you choose to stay, you may have to rearrange some of these outings based on when they are open. Where we could list hours of operations, we have to help you work it out ahead of time.

Day 1: Happy Hour Mocktails and an Escape Room

Ever heard of euphorics? You’re about to – everywhere! Euphorics are the new CBD oil. It’s drinking without the nasty alcohol to go with it. It’s a new kind of non-alcoholic beverage that has spawned whole bars devoted to mixing mocktails blended with nootropics meant to give you a buzz without wrecking your sobriety.

Sounds sketchy right? Actually no, the kind of buzz we are talking about is like taking a shot of Red Bull or caffeine. That’s basically what a nootropic is. You’ll feel a boost of energy, clear thinking, and generally feeling ni-i-i-ice! We found one of the best in LA at Harvard & Stone. Here you get the bar atmosphere with a giant menu of new liquor-free drinks that will get you in the mood for our first adventure!

Tuesdays are the best days to show up at Harvard & Stone for happy hour – that’s when they hold a lot of their events. It opens at 8pm so keep that in mind when you are making your plans.

After drinks, you’re just a short walk away from one of the most memorable adventures of your life. We’re talking your choice from nearly two dozen escape rooms at LA’s number one Escape Room providers – 60out. From the spooky, to the thrilling, to the absurd, there is something there for everyone. Best of all, this is the kind of activity that will give you the kind of natural, alcohol-free high that you’re craving.

Day 2: Caffeine Buzz and Rooftop Yoga

Once again we start the day with a drink – a caffeine drink that is. Our first stop is Alfred Coffee on Melrose. You’ve never had coffee or tea like the ones you’ll find at Alfred’s. They are all unique and inventive, aimed at giving you a nice jolt and a delicious start to your day. You can grab a breakfast pastry or a sandwich here before heading off to rooftop yoga at ROW DTLA.

Held on Sunday in the middle of the month, Flavor & Flow rooftop yoga is the first stop on day 2. The venue is a multi-use center containing over 50 different restaurants and stores. The host is the group from Bender who will lead you and a group of yoga enthusiasts in a 70 minute session on the center’s rooftop.

You’ll listen to soft yet “soulful” music through “Sound Off headphones” mixed by a professional DJ. After yoga, you’ll mingle together at Smorgasburg food festival for brunch; Sign-up for this event is through Eventbrite.

Address: ROW DTLA 777 S Alameda St., Los Angeles, CA 90021

Next we’ll head off to the West Hollywood Design District. Only a six minute walk from the La Peer Hotel, you’ll find over 250 different businesses, shops, restaurants, and vendors to explore. One such attraction is the Pacific Design Center on Melrose Avenue.

The PDC is a ginormous multi-use complex where you can catch a movie in luxury accommodations at the SilverScreen Theater or grab lunch or dinner at one of the two gourmet restaurants inside. If you time it right, you will be there to see an exhibition on display or to see an exclusive screening.

7660 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036

Open five days a week, Monday – Friday from 9am until 5pm, Pacific Design Center is located on the corner of Melrose Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard. The fact that the center closes at 5p is great because we have one more adventure planned for day 2 and that is a night on the town dancing – cleanly – at Unleash!

The music is “dope,” the performances are live, and the activities are original and fun. For instance, unlike a boozy night club, you’ll dance to live music while getting your face and body painted! And you get to sample more euphorical elixirs while you kick it. How’s that for an exciting night out?

Day 3: Farmers Market and A Homicide Tour

Day 3 starts with a jolt of coffee (see the theme here? You’re drinking but not dranking) at Verve Coffee on Melrose Ave., less than two blocks from the La Peer Hotel. This day is action packed so you might want to get started early. FYI, Verve opens at 7am – hint, hint.

Following our morning java is the perfect time to head over to LA’s incredible Original Farmers Market. It’s just a 10 minute car ride from the hotel and opens at 9am so you have time to walk the two miles instead of driving. This is no ordinary farmer’s market either – it is huge! There are dozens upon dozens of vendors of all different kinds and a handy visitor’s page where you can get all of the information that you need about parking and merchants.

For the next few hours, you can step into the movie Pretty Woman and explore Melrose Avenue and Rodeo Drive. In fact, what you may not realize is that Melrose Avenue has become its own art district. You can go on a tour led by one of the area’s famous street artists to explore the murals, galleries, and street art that envelope the district.

So maybe you don’t have the cheddar to really shop on Rodeo Drive, but no one said you couldn’t window shop! And although you may not be able to afford a pair of shoes (or maybe you can) you can probably splurge for a gallant lunch at some posh restaurant on Rodeo.

We’re not done yet! The rest of the day we tickle the sober thrill seeker in you with an adventure on the somewhat darker side. That is, we go on the Homicide True Crime Tour led by Dearly Departed Tours. This famous TV tour group will take you on a journey of some of LA’s most horrific true crimes. There’s even an artifact museum where you can see murder weapons and actual pictures of the grizzly crimes!

Day 4: Art, Shopping, and Night Diving

Rested up? Good because Day 4 is full of adventure too! Now that you’ve got a sample of a couple of LA’s premier coffee houses, we’ll let you choose which one to start day 4 with but after your coffee, we’re going to check out some world class art.

Still in the Melrose Art District, we begin the day at the MAK Center for Art. There are new installations all of the time at the MAK. Through the end of February you will see an installation created by Michelle Chang on display.

Afterward you may want to grab a cab or you could walk the 2.2 miles to the Grove on Cochran Ave. You could waste an entire day at the Grove but for now, maybe check out some of the retail shops, catch a movie, and definitely sit down for brunch, lunch, or dinner before you head out.

You don’t want to lose too much time at the Grove though because our next stop is the famous Roxy Theater – that is, if there is a show that fits into your schedule. This is one of those activities where when start your 5-day vacation will matter and will determine what shows if any will be available when you have time for the Roxy. But, if you can make it, we highly recommend making this stop.

If you weren’t able to make it to a show at the Roxy (and even if you were) our next stop is also one you have to try to plan for because they are “pop-up” shows. You’ll only find Shine® performers popping up in LA, London, or NY only four to six times a year so it can be tricky. But if you are going to catch a Shine® performance, hanging out for five days around Melrose and Beverly is a good way to try.

Shine® prides itself on providing alcohol-free experiences for its audiences – perfect for a 5-day sober and wellness getaway. Still, even if you didn’t get a chance to catch one of those performances, we have an event that you can count on every month, hosted by Aquarium of the Pacific; a Night Dive at the Aquarium.

One Friday night per month, the Aquarium of the Pacific hosts a live band, a DJ is brought in, food trucks pull up, and everybody parties while watching a mural being created in real-time by a group of artists from the area. On top of that, you’re at the aquarium, so make sure to check out the animals while you’re there!
